Reading an income claim

Longer note · updated October 2026

Most misleading side-income offers don't lie outright. They leave things out. Reading a claim for what's missing is faster and more reliable than trying to judge whether the person behind it seems honest.

Five marks to look for

  • The work. Can you describe one task in a sentence?
  • The hours. Is there a figure you could compare with your own week?
  • The fees. Are platform, payment and equipment costs listed?
  • The payment. Does it say when and how you get paid, and any minimum?
  • The tax. Is there any mention that the income may be taxable?

Count what's missing

A claim with all five marks may still not suit you, but you can plan around it. Missing one is common and worth a question. Missing two or more means you don't yet know enough to decide.

Ask, and watch the answer

Genuine platforms and clients answer plain questions plainly, usually in writing. Vague replies, pressure to decide quickly, or a request to move to a private chat are all signs to step back.
